Summary:
The Hospice Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional care to terminally ill patients and their families as well as grief support to the family after the death of the patient.
Ability to work with people of various religious faiths and cultures.
Responsible for developing bereavement programs and overseeing current programs, including social activities and workshops.
DUTIES AND
Responsibilities:
The Hospice Bereavement Counselor / Chaplain demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:
Performs spiritual assessment on all Hospice patients.
Acts as liaison between Hospice and the spiritual community.
Responds to the mental, spiritual, social and emotional needs of terminally ill patients and their families.
Provides non-denominational spiritual counseling per patient and/or family request.
Functions well as part of the interdisciplinary group.
Provides emotional support through discussion of spiritual and/or existential issues.
Assists family in understanding the grief process.
The Hospice Bereavement Counselor / Chaplain gives referrals to family for community grief support groups.
Allows patient and family to voice their concerns, fears and feelings.
Responsive to patient's desires and condition.
Addresses and supports cultural practices, as long as such practices do not harm others.
Supports a culture of safety and quality.
May perform specific religious duties related to the faith in which he/she is ordained, i.
e.
, administration of last rites.
Understands Hospice philosophy and issues of death and dying.
Professional Requirements:
The ability to work effectively in stressful situations while maintaining a calm demeanor.
Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
Completes annual educational requirements.
Maintains regulatory requirements.
Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
Wears identification while on duty.
Attends annual review and inservices.
Attends at least 1 staff meeting / month, reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes.
Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
The Hospice Bereavement Counselor / Chaplain represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the organization.
Regulatory Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in ministry, counseling, social work preferred.
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training required.
Certification required (i.
e.
, APC, NACC, AAPC, NAJC, HCMA or NAVAC) Two (2) years or equivalent full time experience in bereavement counseling within the last three (3) years.
Valid state driver's license and reliable automobile, current automobile insurance and be willing to operate personal car necessitated by nature of job.
Current health certificate/physical examination and TB testing.
Language Skills:
Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Excellent public speaking skills.
Additional languages preferred.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
